Fire management and prevention
Effective fire safety dictates that to prevent a fire we must first identify potential hazards and risks in the area. A fire needs only three things to get started; an ignition point, fuel and oxygen.
Ignition points could include anything from faulty electricals, lighting, heating sources and even arson. It’s critical that these points are identified so that the potential for a fire can be minimised and often completed negated.
Many items can be considered fuel, such as product packaging, foodstuffs containing sugar and oils, paper products, furniture, flammable liquids and chemicals, all of which are often found in factories and warehouses. It’s of the utmost importance that a potential ignition point is not allowed to come into contact with potential fuel.
Oxygen is unavoidable, it’s in the air all around us, after all. However, ventilation systems, chemicals with oxidising properties and stored oxygen (for medical or maintenance reasons) can exacerbate the situation and help a fire to spread faster.
People at risk must also be taken into account. This could be anyone who works in isolation, someone with a disability or people unfamiliar with the premises. Anyone who might be vulnerable or unable to evacuate safely in the event of a fire needs to be thought of and a plan in place to help them in case of an emergency.
