Fire management and prevention
Identifying fire hazards and taking steps to prevent or remove the threat is the very essence of fire safety. A fire only needs three things to start and spread; ignition, fuel and oxygen, all three of which are found in abundance at healthcare premises.
Sources of ignition could be any number of things in healthcare premises, such as faulty electricals, cooking equipment or lighting. Also, physiotherapy and X-ray departments present a significant risk as a source of ignition. Each of these need to be identified as potential risks so that they can be effectively managed.
Fuel is also commonplace at many healthcare premises with many flammable chemicals and gases typically stored in large quantities on site, as well as the usual laundry, textiles and waste products that can help a fire to spread. It’s critical to ensure that anything that could be considered fuel is not stored in the vicinity of a potential ignition point.
Finally, oxygen, which is in the air all around us. However, many healthcare premises also have ventilation systems which can aid the spread of a fire, as well as stored medical oxygen supplies, such as those in cylinders. There are also a number of chemicals that might be found on site that have oxidising properties.
Identifying people at risk within healthcare premises is a large task, this can include employees who work alone, disabled people, incapacitated patients, people with an injury and basically anyone who might have difficulty evacuating or go undetected in the event of a fire. Of course, in this case, there is likely to be a huge amount of people that fall into each of these categories. It’s critical that there’s a plan in place to ensure the safe evacuation of everyone in the event of an emergency.
