Fire management and prevention
Effective fire safety is all about identifying potential hazards and taking steps to negate them. In order to start and spread a fire needs only three things; ignition, fuel and oxygen, which makes this the place to start.
There are often multiple sources of ignition within a theatre or cinema, these could include faulty electricals, lighting equipment, heating sources or cooking equipment. It’s essential that all potential ignition points are highlighted as these are the most likely places a fire might start.
Fuel can take many forms, such as flammable liquids and chemicals, displays, costumes, drapes, packaging and upholstered seats and cushions. If anything that could be considered fuel is close to a potential ignition point it could result in a more dramatic outcome than what’s on screen or stage.
Oxygen is, of course, in the air all around us, but it can also be increased through things such as ventilation systems that can aid the spread of a fire. Also, some chemicals have oxidising properties that can further exacerbate a fire by feeding it more oxygen.
Another consideration that theatre and cinema owners should always be mindful of is the people within the building who are at risk. There’s a duty of care to ensure provisions are made for people who have disabilities, the elderly, children and anyone else who might be vulnerable and unable to evacuate safely in the event of a fire.
